Ivory

Ivory

Nominated by Kathy Carroll, Early Steps

Ivory was referred to Early Steps after being diagnosed at birth with Erb’s Palsy and a brachial plexus injury, which limited movement in her left arm. She receives physical and occupational therapy weekly. Ivory receives primary care and dental services at CDTC with Dr. LaFrance and Dr. Oliveira. She lives with her mom and grandparents and attends preschool Monday through Friday.

At therapy onset, Ivory had minimal active movement in her left arm. Her mom learned passive range-of-motion exercises and proper positioning to prevent tightness in her shoulder, elbow, wrist, and hand, common due to muscle weakness. Before turning one, Ivory wore a cast for two months to improve shoulder mobility, despite the challenges, she continued developing skills such as moving on the floor and sitting to play.

At nine months, Ivory underwent extensive nerve graft surgery, two small nerves were taken from her legs and grafted to her upper arm to encourage nerve regrowth and improve left arm strength. Post-surgery, she wore another cast for six weeks before resuming therapy. She initially showed caution around new people and leaned on her mom for comfort. Her family has been dedicated, practicing therapeutic activities daily.

During a recent review of her Individualized Family Support Plan, Ivory’s team reported exceptional progress. Now at 2 years old, she is actively using both hands during play and daily tasks. Occupational therapy focuses on dressing, self-feeding, and fine motor skills, while physical therapy strengthens her arm to help lift and carry objects for preschool readiness.

Ivory’s therapists are thrilled by her enthusiasm and progress. She joyfully greets everyone and eagerly participates in therapy. Mom shares that Ivory loves balls, books, building blocks, and is talking more each day. Proudly, Mom highlights Ivory’s progress in therapy and her sociable, kind nature.

Ivory is truly an inspiring hero!

About our Hero of the Month

Each month, CDTC staff nominate one of our children as our  Hero of the Month. These special boys and girls are heroes in our eyes. They show strength, perseverance, determination and a positive outlook while facing great challenges.

Their stories are powerful and heartwarming and reflect the impact CDTC and you, our community, has on their daily lives.

A visit to our clinic is more than a doctor’s appointment for a child with special healthcare needs.

However, insurance doesn’t cover every expense, which is why your support makes such a difference.
